๐ฅ Species Spotlight: Firecrest – Nature’s Spark
This Bonfire Night, meet the Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus) – one of the UK’s smallest birds, but with a crown that rivals any firework. Its vivid orange crest and energetic movements light up our woodlands like sparks in the dark.
๐ Often mistaken for the Goldcrest, the Firecrest is rarer and prefers mature woodland and coniferous forests.
๐ฒ Look out for it flitting through branches, especially in southern England.
๐ A true ember of the forest – small, bright, and full of life.

At our annual company day earlier this year, we were joined by the fantastic @DannyMcDonnell, who brought energy, laughter, and a brilliant talk on the history of face-to-face fundraising.
From insightful stories to spontaneous dance moves, it was a day to remember — and a perfect reminder of the passion behind what we do.

๐ Species Spotlight: Dead Man’s Fingers
This eerie-looking fungus is a perfect fit for spooky season! Found growing on decaying wood, Dead Man’s Fingers (Xylaria polymorpha) emerges from fallen trees and stumps like something out of a ghost story — dark, finger-like projections that give it its chilling name.
Despite its appearance, this fungus plays a vital role in woodland ecosystems, helping to break down dead wood and recycle nutrients back into the soil. Nature’s decomposition crew never looked so haunting!

๐ Amy’s Venue Spotlight: Donna Nook Nature Reserve, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
Every November and December, the coastline at Donna Nook transforms into one of the UK’s most spectacular wildlife events — the arrival of the grey seals. Stretching over 10km between Grainthorpe Haven and Saltfleet, this stunning reserve welcomes hundreds of seals who come ashore to give birth to their pups near the sand dunes.
Our team will be at Donna Nook frequently throughout the season, engaging with visitors and sharing how they can support local conservation efforts. If you’re visiting, come say hello and learn more about our work with the Wildlife Trusts!

๐ฆ Species Spotlight: Tawny Owl
As the nights draw in and Halloween approaches, the eerie call of the Tawny Owl echoes through our woodlands. Known for its haunting “twit-twoo” duet, this nocturnal hunter is a master of stealth, blending perfectly into tree trunks with its mottled brown plumage.
Tawny Owls are widespread across the UK, favouring mature woodland, parks, and even large gardens. Though often heard more than seen, their presence is a sign of a healthy habitat — and a reminder of nature’s quiet mysteries.
